How Long Does It Take to Get a NYC Marriage Certificate?

Here is what to expect in 2026.

If you need a copy of your New York City marriage certificate, the timeline depends largely on how you request it, the type of certificate you need, and what you plan to do with it afterward. Getting the certificate itself can be relatively quick if you are able to request it in person. A request by mail can take considerably longer. If you also need an apostille or authentication for international use, additional steps are required after obtaining the marriage certificate.

Hi, I’m Corinne JOX.
I’m a New York City wedding officiant and document retrieval specialist. I help clients in the U.S. and around the world obtain their NYC marriage certificates and navigate apostille and authentication requirements. I handle the process locally in New York, so you don’t have to figure it out from afar.

How Long Does It Take to Get a NYC Marriage Certificate in Person?

The fastest way to obtain a copy of your NYC marriage certificate is generally to request it in person through the NYC City Clerk. You will need to schedule a Record Room appointment through the City Clerk. Depending on the record and your situation, you may be able to obtain your marriage certificate during your visit. For marriage records dated before 1996, the NYC City Clerk instructs applicants to select the Manhattan office when scheduling an in-person Record Room appointment.

How Long Does It Take to Get a NYC Marriage Certificate by Mail?

Mail requests take significantly longer. The NYC City Clerk currently advises that it makes every effort to respond to marriage record requests received by mail within approximately 6 to 8 weeks. You will need to submit the appropriate marriage record request form, identification, payment, and any other required documentation. If you have an upcoming deadline, requesting your certificate by mail may therefore not be the best option.

Standard vs. Extended Marriage Certificate

The type of certificate you request is also important. A Standard Marriage Certificate is generally used for domestic purposes in the United States. An Extended Marriage Certificate is used when the document needs to go through authentication or apostille procedures for international use.

The NYC City Clerk currently charges:

Standard Marriage Certificate: $15 for the first copy and $10 for each additional copy. Extended Marriage Certificate: $35 for the first copy and $30 for each additional copy.

What If I Need My NYC Marriage Certificate Quickly?

If you are working with a deadline, obtaining the certificate in person may be considerably faster than requesting it by mail. If you are unable to visit the NYC City Clerk yourself, someone may be able to retrieve the certificate on your behalf depending on your situation and the documentation provided. I offer a local NYC marriage certificate retrieval service for clients who cannot complete the process themselves.

How Long Does an Apostille Take After Getting the Marriage Certificate?

Obtaining your marriage certificate is only the first step if you need an apostille for international use. For a NYC marriage certificate, you will need the Extended Form. The document then goes through New York County Clerk authentication before being submitted for the New York State apostille. The total timeline therefore depends on how you complete each step and how the documents are submitted.

What If I Live Outside New York?

You do not necessarily need to travel back to New York just to obtain your marriage certificate. Depending on your situation, you may be able to authorize someone to retrieve the certificate on your behalf. This can be particularly useful if you have moved to another state, returned to your home country, or need the certificate for an administrative procedure abroad.

What If I Live Outside the United States?

If you are already abroad, the amount of time required will also depend on what needs to happen after the marriage certificate is retrieved. For example, you may simply need the certificate itself, or you may also need an apostille or authentication before the document can be used in your country. Shipping time should also be taken into consideration.

If you are abroad and need assistance, I can retrieve the appropriate NYC marriage certificate and help with the additional New York steps when required.
