When Same-Day Apostille Service Is Possible
Same-day service is possible when I have enough time to complete all the required steps during government office hours.
If you contact me early in the morning, ideally before the offices open, there is a much better chance that I can complete the entire process that same day.
I also need to have all the documents and information required for your situation before I can begin.
If I Need to Retrieve Your Marriage Certificate
If you do not already have the correct extended marriage certificate, I will first need to retrieve it for you from the NYC Marriage Bureau Record Room.
For a marriage that took place less than 50 years ago, I will need a notarized authorization letter allowing me to request the marriage certificate on your behalf. I cannot retrieve your marriage certificate without this authorization letter.
For a same-day request, I need to receive the notarized authorization letter before I can begin the process.
Once I have the authorization and the information I need, I can start the process immediately.
If You Already Have the Correct Marriage Certificate
If you already have the extended marriage certificate and only need the remaining authentication and apostille steps, the process can be faster because I do not need to retrieve a new certificate first.
I will need to see the document to confirm that it is the correct version and ready for the next steps.
If you are in New York, we can arrange for me to receive the original document.
If you are outside New York, you will need to ship the original document to me. In this situation, same-day service refers to completing the required New York steps once I have received your original document.
The Three Steps for a NYC Marriage Certificate Apostille
A New York City marriage certificate generally goes through three steps before it is ready for use abroad.
Step 1: Extended Marriage Certificate
The first step is obtaining the extended certified copy of the marriage record from the NYC Marriage Bureau Record Room.
The extended form contains additional information about the marriage record and is the version used for the authentication and apostille process.
If you do not already have it, I can retrieve it for you once I have the required authorization.
Step 2: County Clerk Authentication
The extended marriage certificate is then taken to the County Clerk for authentication.
This step authenticates the signature of the City Clerk appearing on the marriage certificate before the document goes to the New York Department of State.
Step 3: Apostille or Certificate of Authentication
The final New York step is completed through the New York Department of State.
If the country where you will use your marriage certificate is a member of the Hague Apostille Convention, the document receives an Apostille.
If the destination country is not part of the Hague Apostille Convention, a Certificate of Authentication may be required instead.
Urgent Apostille Service Before Leaving New York

If there is enough time and I have everything required, I can work to complete the process before you leave New York.
If your departure is too soon to finish everything before your flight, you do not necessarily need to change your travel plans or stay in New York longer.
I can continue the process after you leave and arrange to ship the completed documents to you.
Apostille Service If You Have Already Left New York
You do not need to be physically in New York for me to help you.
I regularly assist clients who have already returned home to another state or another country.
Depending on what documents you already have, I can handle the remaining New York steps and arrange for your completed documents to be shipped back to you.
International shipping with tracking can be arranged based on your destination and how quickly you need the documents.
Government Fees for a NYC Marriage Certificate Apostille
Government fees are separate from my service fee.
For one NYC extended marriage certificate, the government fees are generally:
Extended marriage certificate: $35
County Clerk authentication: $3
New York State Apostille or Certificate of Authentication: $10
Total government fees for one document: $48
Additional copies have additional government fees.
My service fee depends on what you already have, the steps I need to complete, the number of documents and the urgency of your request.
FAQ
Can I use the marriage certificate I already have?
It depends on which version of the marriage certificate you have.
If you are unsure, send me a picture of your certificate. I can check it and tell you whether it is ready for authentication and apostille or whether you need an extended marriage certificate.
Do both spouses need to be present?
No. Both spouses do not need to be physically present for me to handle the apostille process.
If I need to retrieve a marriage certificate for a marriage that took place less than 50 years ago, I will need a notarized authorization letter allowing me to retrieve the record.
What if my country does not use apostilles?
Not every country is part of the Hague Apostille Convention.
If your marriage certificate will be used in a non-Hague country, you may need a Certificate of Authentication instead of an Apostille. Depending on the destination country, additional steps may also be required after the New York authentication.
Can you process more than one marriage certificate?
Yes. If you need several original marriage certificates for different administrative procedures, multiple copies can be processed.
